The web-based tool p2:
preparing your observation

The web application p2 must be used to prepare the Phase 2 material of Paranal's service and visitor mode (SM and VM, respectively) runs, including designated VM. A very similar tool is p2ls, that must be used for preparing observations for La Silla instruments in service and (designated) VM modes. The La Silla users can use the p2 Help pages as a reference guide-line for the use of p2ls.

The tool p2 can be access through at:

Please, log-in by using your ESO User Portal credentials. Explore the p2 tool menu pages to find a guide through the basic concepts of the tool and all the tutorials you need for preparing your observations.

If you are an old friend of the ESO observatories and you submitted OBs before the implementation of p2, please be aware of the following aspects:
-
Service Mode runs: All OBs that were submitted (check-in) via P2PP3 in P100 or afterwards are visible in p2 under the previous run ID. Those OBs can be re-used by copying & pasting from the previous run to the current run within p2. Please notice that the creation of OBs with p2 inside P100 observing runs and earlier is not supported in p2.
-
Visitor Mode runs: OBs belonging to visitor mode runs that were executed at least once during P100 or afterwards are already visible in p2 under the previous run ID. Those OBs can be re-used and simply copy & pasted from the older run to the current run within p2.

What to do for a large number of OBs?
For large programs or expensive programmes, it is necessary to generate a large number of very similar OBs. Doing this manually in p2 might be time consuming and prone to error. For this reason we created python scripts that can help you in designing your OBs automatically and import them into the database to make them available in p2. Please see here further details.
